The day, and what it costs

This is the reason to come to Hurghada. A day boat heads out to the protected Giftun reef, usually with two snorkel stops over the coral and then beach time on Orange Bay’s brilliant white sand. The reef is genuinely good — protected, healthy coral and plenty of fish — and on a calm day the water is clear enough that you don’t need to be a strong swimmer to enjoy it. A full-day trip with lunch and hotel transfer typically runs from about £20–55 per person, depending on the boat; a separate marine-park or environmental fee may be charged on top, so carry a little cash.

The single most important booking decision is the boat itself. The cheapest trips pile up to 200 tourists onto party boats — crowded, loud and rushed, with everyone tipped onto the same patch of reef at once. Pay a little more for a smaller boat and the day transforms: more time in the water, calmer surroundings and space to actually enjoy the coral.

Making the most of it

Trips usually depart mid-morning and return in the late afternoon, and they run year-round weather permitting — rough conditions can cancel a sailing, so build a little flexibility into your week. Bring reef-safe sun cream, a hat and your own mask if you have one, since hire kit varies. Crucially, follow the reef rules: don’t touch or stand on the coral, and don’t chase the fish — it’s a protected area for a reason.

Is it worth it? Comfortably yes, and for most visitors it’s the highlight of a Hurghada trip — the Red Sea reefs are why the coast exists as a resort at all. Set expectations sensibly on Orange Bay, which is beautiful but busy and developed rather than a deserted island. Book the smaller boat, go on a calm-forecast day, and you’ll come back salty, sunburnt and glad you did it.
