Where to stay in Albufeira

The cleanest first-timer pick: cobbled lanes, the church square, hundreds of restaurants and the town beach reached through a cliff tunnel. Lively in a tapas-and-squares way rather than a club way, and most of a holiday is doable on foot. The trade-off is steep streets and some evening noise on the bar-heavy lanes near Largo Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco, so ask for a room set back from the main drag.

The value compromise: a short uphill walk above the Strip, close enough to roll down to the bars at night but far enough to sleep.
