Andaman Coast
Phi Phi Islands & Maya Bay
How to do the Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay from Phuket: which boat tour to book, the early-departure trick that beats the crowds, and whether Maya Bay is still worth it now you can only wade.
Where
Phuket, Thailand
Opening hours
Phi Phi sits within Hat Noppharat TharaโMu Ko Phi Phi National Park, open daily roughly 08:00โ18:00. Maya Bay closes entirely each year from 1 August to 30 September for ecological recovery, and individual bays can shut at short notice in rough seas โ confirm with your operator the day before.
Tickets
Speedboat day tours run about เธฟ1,800โ3,500 (ยฃ42โยฃ82) from Phuket, with the better small-group trips at the top end. The separate national-park entry fee is เธฟ400 (about ยฃ9) for foreign adults and เธฟ200 for children, usually but not always included โ check before you book.
Time needed
A full day, around 8โ9 hours door to door from a west-coast Phuket beach, including roughly 45โ50 minutes each way on the boat.
In short
Visiting Phi Phi Islands & Maya Bay
Phi Phi is reached almost entirely by booked boat tour from Phuket, so the page that matters is the tour, not the island. Book a small-group speedboat that leaves Phuket by around 8am โ it reaches Maya Bay before the midday armada of larger boats arrives. Choose a tour that bundles the national-park fee, accept that Maya Bay is now wade-only (no swimming on the beach itself), and treat the snorkelling at Pileh Lagoon and Loh Samah Bay as the real reward.
How to do Phi Phi without the worst of it
The thing to understand is that Phi Phi is a boat day, not a place you turn up to โ almost everyone goes on a booked tour from Phuket, and the single decision that shapes the whole experience is the departure time. Book a small-group speedboat that leaves by around 8am: it reaches Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon before the larger boats and the 11am-onward crowds, and in the December-to-April high season the better operators sell out a day or two ahead, so book online before you fly rather than off a beach-road board. Pick a tour that bundles the เธฟ400 national-park fee so youโre not caught out at the pier, and ignore the cheapest packed-cruiser options โ the saving isnโt worth the queue at every stop.
The mistake people make is pinning the day on Maya Bay itself. Since the reopening you can only wade knee-deep there, not swim, boats moor on the far side and walk you in, and the beach from the film is busy by mid-morning whatever you do. The actual reward is the water around it: snorkelling at Pileh Lagoon and Loh Samah Bay, the monkeys at Monkey Beach, and the lighter crowds early on.
Worth the boat trip? It depends on what you want
Time it for the December-to-April dry season, when the Andaman is calmest and the snorkelling clearest, and steer clear of August and September, when Maya Bay closes outright for recovery and rough seas cancel boats. Itโs a full 8-to-9-hour day with roughly 45 minutes on the water each way, so build in a slow beach day afterwards rather than stacking it against another tour.
Go early and judge it on the snorkelling rather than the famous beach. If you want calmer water, fewer boats and a gentler day โ better for families or weaker swimmers โ Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island are the quieter alternative from the same Phuket base.
