How to visit without baking in the queue

There’s no online timed ticket and no skip-the-line lane at the City Palace, so the thing that decides your visit is when you turn up, not what you pre-book. The window is at the Badi Pol gate and it opens at 09:30 — get there for that and you walk straight in, ahead of both the Rajasthan heat and the late-morning coach groups coming off the Golden Triangle loop. Roll up at 11am in season and you’ll spend twenty minutes in a slow queue in full sun before you’ve seen a thing.

Buy the plain museum ticket (about ₹300, roughly £2.35) if you just want the courtyards, the Mor Chowk peacock mosaics and the lake views — that’s the palace at its best. The Crystal Gallery is a separate ₹650 ticket and a niche one; skip it unless decorative arts are your thing. If you’d rather have the symbolism explained and avoid the gate scrum entirely, book a half-day Udaipur tour or a licensed guide that includes the entry, which is the one genuine reason to book ahead here.

Timing the palace and the lake

Do the palace first thing in the morning and save Lake Pichola for the golden hour — the same honey-coloured walls you’ve walked through light up from the water as the sun drops, so a late-afternoon boat is the natural pairing, not a second palace the same day. Allow two to three hours inside; it’s a steep, stair-heavy complex of ramps and uneven stone, so wear proper shoes and pace it in the heat.

At a couple of pounds for the base ticket, this is the rare sight that’s almost absurdly good value, and it’s the one paid attraction in Udaipur worth the entry. Treat the floating Taj Lake Palace as a photograph from up here rather than somewhere you can visit — you can’t, unless you’re staying — and let the City Palace plus a sunset boat be your whole Udaipur day rather than racing it.
