In short
Visiting City Palace
Rajasthan's largest palace complex, a wall of carved stone, balconies and cupolas rising straight off the east bank of Lake Pichola. Go when it opens to beat the heat and the tour-bus crush. The Mor Chowk peacock mosaics and the lake views are the highlights; the separately ticketed Crystal Gallery is an optional add-on.
The palace, and whatโs worth your time
The City Palace is Rajasthanโs largest palace complex, and from the lake itโs the defining image of Udaipur โ a long wall of honey-coloured stone, balconies, arches and cupolas rising straight off the east bank of Lake Pichola. Begun in the sixteenth century and added to by successive Maharanas, itโs a warren of courtyards, narrow staircases and mirrored chambers that climbs to terraces with the best views in the city. Part of it is a museum; part remains royal residence and luxury hotel.
Head for the highlights rather than trying to absorb everything. The Mor Chowk peacock mosaics โ three peacocks in coloured glass and tile representing the seasons โ are the showpiece, and the upper terraces give you Lake Pichola, the Lake Palace floating on it and the Aravalli hills beyond. General museum entry is modest, around โน300 (about ยฃ2.40), with a camera fee in places. The Crystal Gallery, with its rare Osler crystal collection, is a separate and notably pricier ticket where photography is usually banned โ a worthwhile extra only if crystal genuinely draws you.
Beating the heat and the crowds
Go right at opening, mid-morning. Udaipur is fiercely hot for much of the year, and the palaceโs tight staircases and courtyards bottleneck quickly once the tour coaches arrive; getting in first lets you work up through the rooms to the lake-view terraces while theyโre still quiet. Allow an hour and a half to two hours for the main museum, more with the Crystal Gallery.
The entrance is up from the lakefront near Jagdish Temple, and it pairs naturally with a sunset boat trip on Pichola afterwards. Hours shift with the season and on festival days, and ticket prices are revised from time to time, so confirm the current opening times and fees on the official site before you go rather than trusting a guidebook figure.
